LMBL Member Roles and Responsibilities
President
- Administer the League Constitution: ensure compliance by all
teams and players in the spirit to which it was intended. Be a Leader, not
a Dictator. Be judgmental, but unbiased. Be firm, but fair. Be decisive,
but compassionate. Be prepared to justify your actions – If you are fair
in your decisions, you will gain respect, but no matter what you do, many
will voice their displeasure – a thick skin and poor hearing often come in
handy!
- Attend and chair all league meetings. Table your ideas – we
can’t make it better if we don’t know what’s broke. The most important
meeting is the Annual Meeting and Banquet where the new executive is
elected.
- Notify managers (or their designated backup) of meetings.
- Ensure minimum 7 executive members at each meeting (get
proxies if required). Ask managers for vacation plans, planned absences,
etc.
- During off-season, work with the team managers to find
replacement players (and new Manager if required).
- Ensure every team has sufficient number of players. This can
be delegated to a Registrar (Good Luck!).
- Ensure fair and equitable schedule (night games, Labatt Park,
etc) is prepared 1 month prior to season start – confirm Parks, Umpires
and Scorekeepers. Make changes as required, providing minimum 48hours
notice to Managers, Umpires and Scorekeepers. This can be delegated to a Convenor (usually the Vice-President).
- Ensure that the Banquet is planned, booked and held soon
after the playoffs are completed. Ensure player trophies are purchased,
plates are printed and attached to the league trophies. Remind past trophy
winners to return league trophies well in advance of Banquet!
- Manage managers with care and consideration. Remember: most
managers will not voluntarily leave their position – you must take charge
if there is a problem.
- Inform the Executive of your vacation plans, what you expect
of them, etc.
- Fill equipment requests as required, including first aid
kits, baseballs, cracked helmets, etc.
- Listen to and learn from the other executive members – your
biggest job is to provide leadership and encourage ideas. The behaviour of all players on the field is a direct
reflection of your leadership.
- Respond to all complaints, concerns and ideas from players,
umpires, scorekeepers, managers, fans, etc.
- During your last year in office (3 years is the recommended
maximum), prepare a successor for your job. Having this person as the
Vice-President during your last year is recommended, but not necessary.
- Expect to spend about 10 hours per week in this role. This
will increase to about 20 during registration and playoffs, and reduce to
about 1 during the off season. If you can’t spare the time, then inform
the Executive – together you will find a replacement for you.
Past-President and Vice-President (roles are the same – believe it
or not!)
- Attend all league meetings. Table your ideas – we can’t make
it better if we don’t know what’s broke.
- Inform the Executive of your vacation plans, etc.
- Be prepared to take over the duties of the President if
called upon.
- Expect to spend about 1 hour per week in this role. Add an
extra 2 hours per week if you are also performing the Convenor
role. This will reduce to about 0 during the off season. If you can’t
spare the time, then inform the Executive – together you will find a
replacement for you.
Secretary-Treasurer
- Attend all league meetings, present balance sheet and take
minutes. Table your ideas – we can’t make it better if we don’t know
what’s broke. Distribute meeting agenda, minutes, league correspondence,
etc.
- Inform the Executive of your vacation plans, etc.
- Pay and record all league bills and deposit receipts.
- Expect to spend about 1 hour per week in this role. This will
increase to about 10 during registration period, and reduce to about 0
during the off season. If you can’t spare the time, then inform the
Executive – together you will find a replacement for you.
Manager
- Attend all league meetings – either you or your designated
backup. If both of you cannot attend, designate another backup. Table your
ideas – we can’t make it better if we don’t know what’s broke.
- Inform the Executive of your vacation plans, etc.
- Notify players of rescheduled games. When leaving messages, followup to ensure player got it.
- Ensure minimum 9 players at each game (get Spares if required
– inform convenor if short).
- Ensure team has sufficient number of pitchers (recommended
minimum of 3) and catchers (recommended minimum of 3). Train new pitchers
during blowouts or when you are short of regular pitchers.
- Manage players with care and consideration – pull your
pitcher if he’s getting hit hard. Remember: most pitchers (or any player)
will not voluntarily leave their position – you must take charge.
- Ensure each player gets equal (or mutually agreed to) playing
time. This may change during the playoffs, but only if previously agreed
to by majority of players. Make a lineup before you show up at the game
AND be prepared to make last-minute changes.
- Inform Backup Manager of your vacation plans, what you expect
of him, and give him the team roster list.
- Keep your equipment complete and in good shape, including the
first aid kit – advise President of any shortages (running low on
baseballs, cracked helmets, etc).
- During season startup, make an effort to encourage previous
year players to sign up. Work with the league to find players to fill
vacant positions – specially pitchers and catchers.
- Ensure each player wears a proper baseball uniform at every
game – a numbered (same one for each game) team shirt, team hat, cleats
(not metal) and baseball pants. Keep a spare shirt and hat handy for
spares.
- Listen to and take care of your players – your biggest job is
to provide leadership and encourage team unity. Your team’s behaviour and performance on the field and in the
dugout are a direct reflection of your leadership.
- Expect to spend about 6 hours per week in this role. This
will increase to about 10 during registration period and playoffs, and
reduce to about 0 during the off season. If you can’t spare the time, then
inform the Executive – together you will find a replacement for you.

- Be prepared to take over the duties of your Manager if called
upon.
- Expect to spend about 1 hour per week in this role. This will

- Read, Understand and Preach (to other players) the League
Constitution, and Comply with it!
- Keep your Manager informed of your vacation plans, preferred
positions, etc.
- Make your team and the league better than it was before you
joined it. Help out your team, and if can spare a few hours a week – volunteer
for an Executive position. It can be a rewarding learning experience.
- If you see or hear anything that is inappropriate as per the
Official Rules of Baseball or the LMBL Constitution, report it to a member
of the Executive – If you want action taken, put it in writing.
